Description

Polished Fluorite Octahedron
Cave-in-Rock, Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District
Hardin Co.
Illinois, USA

Usually the province of amusement park gift-shops catering to small children, Fluorite 'diamonds' have been a staple of the industry for years. Very much unlike the 'cleaved' versions, offered by such purveyors of rubber tomahawks, this polished jewel elevates the genre to that of actual art. Not only is it perfectly proportioned and large, it contains a secret world of rarely seen inclusions. The bottom half of the polished octahedron is composed of darkly banded, purple Fluorite. It is in the "upper" half where things get weird. The artist who produced this wonder, cleverly positioned the "equator" exactly on a crystal plane from which ghostly pyramids of "smoke" arise. These colorless inclusions project into the interior transparent, light yellow, upper half of the octahedron. Whether you see them as pyramids or Christmas trees or some other denizens of your imagination, the simple fact remains that you will never see one like this again. The polish is perfect and there is a chip on the top point.
Measurements: 2.81 inches (7.2 cm) from tip to tip
