Description

Woolly Mammoth Tusk
Mammuthus primigenius
Pleistocene
Alaska, USA

Substantially heavy, extremely girthy, and beautifully polished, this Woolly Mammoth Tusk is more of a tip than a full tusk, but has many unique and compelling characteristics. This piece measures some 19 inches (48 cm) in "straight line" dimension and offers a lovely mix of colors, including not only hues of creamy tan and golden brown but also rich green, due to the presence of the mineral Vivianite in the fossilization process. Presented on a custom wooden cradle display base, this is a visually captivating fossil, but the incomplete portion of the wonderfully curvaceous form has a lot more to offer. An open section that runs the length of the partial tusk is rough and natural, allowing an amazing peek into the rustic and layered internal structure of the specimen. This is one unique opportunity to view both the exterior and interior of a bonafide Ice Age fossil to get an understanding of why it looks the way it does, especially when preserved. In the stand, the display face dominates, so it does not reveal the secrets hidden on the backside. The contrast of the smooth, and colorful, face against the natural, and rugged, back results in an amazing duality, making this a most unique form. This is a beautiful piece of Mammoth tusk with a historical and scientific "story to tell" for a bonus. This remnant of Mammuthus primigenius was found in Alaska and weighs 4 kilograms (9 pounds).
Tusk Measurements: 19.09 x 4.33 x 3.27 inches (48.50 x 11.00 x 8.30 cm)
