Description

Woolly Rhinoceros Jaw Section
Coelodonta antiquitatis
Pleistocene
Siberia, Russia

Presentation on a simple custom wood and metal pin base allows this fossil to be displayed on an angle which does help showcase the material in a most dramatic manner, but this unique fossil is not really in need of much help. This bony jaw section, with nicely preserved teeth in their sockets, once resided in the "mouth" of a Woolly Rhinoceros from Siberia, Russia, dating to the Ice Age. Representing the Coelodonta antiquitatis variety, this fossil contains multiple well-preserved teeth with a darker and mottled blackish-brown coloration that contrasts wonderfully with the chocolate-brown hue of the lighter jawbone. The piece is quite solid with some exposed fractured layering not adversely impacting the structural integrity of the Pleistocene fossil. The near complete set of teeth in the section of the jaw is the key to the paleontological oddity. Woolly Rhinos looked very strange, but this fossil remnant does not. This is a big fossil with a lot to like about it, sure to start a conversation.
Jaw Measurements: 17.13 x 5.71 x 2.38 inches (43.50 x 14.50 x 6.05 cm)
