Description

Ammonites

Ammonite Fossil on Wood Base
Didymoceras nebrascenense
Late Cretaceous
Pierre Shale Formation
South Dakota, USA

As specimens of this type cannot be commercially collected and are only rarely discovered by excavators while splitting Shale nodules in search of more common fossils, Didymoceras Ammonites are among the most coveted and unusual examples in the entire fossil record. These extraordinary heteromorph Ammonites-so named for their loosely coiled, irregular shell forms-have long fascinated paleontologists and collectors alike. Their bizarre, sculptural shapes distinguish them from the tightly coiled Ammonites typically associated with the group, making them both scientifically significant and visually captivating. The present specimen, dating to approximately 70 million years ago, has been expertly prepared by renowned fossil preparator Neal Larson, who painstakingly freed it from its surrounding rock matrix to reveal the full beauty of its intricate coiling and surface detail. The shell displays a rich iridescence, ranging from dark honey tones to pearlescent white, with a subtle luster that shifts in the light. Presented on a natural wood base, this superb Didymoceras is both a masterwork of preparation and preservation-a striking blend of scientific rarity and aesthetic elegance, representing one of the most imaginative forms in all of natural history.
Ammonite Measurements: 7.72 x 5.71 x 4.13 inches (19.60 x 14.50 x 10.50 cm)

Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector
