Description

Trilobite Fossil Mass Mortality Plate
Xenasaphus devexus
Middle Ordovician, Uhaku Regional Stage
Volchov River, St. Petersburg, Russia

Mass mortality plates are exceedingly rare within the fossil record of Trilobites, and examples featuring individuals of substantial size are particularly uncommon. The present assemblage of Xenasaphus devexus, recovered from Ordovician strata near St. Petersburg, Russia, represents one of the finest and most visually striking examples ever discovered. Each specimen averages approximately 3 inches (8 cm) in length, preserved in remarkable relief and alignment, evoking the dramatic moment of a single ancient event that entombed an entire colony. Trilobites hold a place of distinction in paleontological history as among the earliest arthropods and were the first known creatures to develop complex, compound eyes. Their adaptability and diversity made them one of the most successful lineages of early marine life, thriving in the world's oceans for more than 300 million years. Their reign came to an end during the Permian Extinction, approximately 250 million years ago, long before the rise of the dinosaurs. The present plate, with its scientific importance, rarity, and natural aesthetic, stands as both a testament to evolution's early innovation and a striking work of natural art, worthy of the most discerning collection.
Overall Measurements: 33.50 x 30.00 x 4.00 inches (85.09 x 76.20 x 10.16 cm)

Provenance: Property of a Distinguished Southern California Collector
