Hackmanite SpherePoudrette quarry (De-Mix quarry; Demix quarry; Uni-Mix quarry; Carrière Mont Saint-Hilaire; MSH)
Mont Saint-Hilaire, La Vallée-du-Richelieu RCM, Montérégie
Québec, Canada
Hackmanite, a rare variety of Sodalite, possesses unique properties and a habit, reversible photochromism, also known as tenebrescence. Under normal light, it features a captivating mix of white veining, brown crystals, and varying shades of gray with contrasting black patches of Amphibole crystals. When exposed to Longwave (LW) Ultraviolet light, the sphere glows with an intense reddish-purple coloration, while under Shortwave (SW) Ultraviolet light, the mineral appears bright orange. After exposure, the rare material retains the color change before gradually returning to its natural state. From the type Canadian locality, this large decorative orb is a quintessential example of the extraordinary variety. Measuring 3.15 inches (8 cm) in diameter, the expertly cut and polished polo ball-sized sphere represents a highly collectible specimen in excellent condition.
Measurements: 3.15 inches (8.00 cm) in diameter
