Description
Sikhote-Alin Meteorite & E.L. Krinov CoinIron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time
A truly historic offering, this group consists of an amazing meteorite as well as a rare commemorative coin with a most unique feature. The specimen is a very rare and desirable, uncleaned, regmaglypted individual with the additional rarity of a natural hole. With two fabric labels on each side marked with "0070" verifying provenance from The Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry, which is one of the foremost institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the piece represents a relatively low collection number suggesting it was an early find. Accompanying the beautiful specimen showing complex texture, orangey patina coloration, and exquisite shape is a limited edition and long sold-out collective coin commemorating the eminent Russian meteorite scientist E.L. Krinov, who did seminal work on the Sikhote-Alin fall. A unique feature of the coin is an actual tiny piece of the meteorite in a small dye-cut hole on the back of the Silver medallion. The front displays a portrait of Krinov, with his name, while the back includes a depiction commemorating the impact event on the 60th anniversary, with the dates 1947-2007 embossed on the sizable coin. The meteorite specimen weighs 193 grams.
Measurements: 3.15 x 1.88 x 1.00 inches (7.99 x 4.78 x 2.53 cm), weighs 192.5 grams
Provenance: Ex. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry #0070, The Geoff Notkin Collection
