Description

Sikhote-Alin Meteorite "Shrapnel" "The Monster"
Iron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time

This rustic and flame-like piece of Sikhote-Alin represents a rare, uncleaned specimen of "shrapnel" with a rich, brownish overall coloration along with many patches of pleasing, orangey patina. Measuring over 5 inches (13 cm) and weighing 331 grams, this is a sizable example with a markedly different appearance than most examples of the torn metal resulting from violent fragmentation. This offering includes a pair of tiny hole formations near the periphery of the rugged, metallic form. Aptly nicknamed "The Monster" for its rather ominous shape and form, this technically also belongs in Geoff Notkin's "Sikhote-Alin Zoo." Of course, any quality sample from the iconic witnessed Russian fall is something special and collectible.
Measurements: 5.43 x 2.37 x 0.94 inches (13.80 x 6.02 x 2.39 cm), weighs 330.8 grams

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
