Description

Liddicoatite Tourmaline Slice
Anjanabonoina pegmatites, Ambohimanambola, Betafo District, Vakinankaratra, Madagascar
9.9 x 8.9 x 0.35 cm (3.88 x 3.50 x 0.13 in)

This glassy slice of Tourmaline is packed full of features: firstly, the beautifully organic edges of the slice give way to much straighter, geometric zones within, layering systematically between pink, green, and orange, all transparent. Overlaying this zoning is mottles of darker pink, finely textured and consistent throughout this lighter outline. The layering of the pink and green colors creates an effect similar to chromatic aberration around the core, and the negative crystals within. Perhaps the most remarkable feature of this specimen lies in the core zone itself: the sharply delineated triangle has one corner that begins as a totally transparent hot-pink, which then elegantly transitions into olive green, then a deep forest green. This asymmetrical gradient is incredibly unique, and a distinguishing feature of this slice. This specimen is most likely Liddicoatite, a species in the Tourmaline group (not a variety!) as is the majority of the slices from Madagascar. This slice is in pristine condition, with no chipping and a perfect polish.
