Description

Odessa Meteorite
Iron, IAB-MG
Ector County, Texas, USA - (31° 43'N, 102° 24'W)
Found: 1922

The Odessa Crater is one of only two impact craters in the United States proven to produce meteorites, with the other being the Meteor Crater in Arizona. Odessa material from the locality in Ector County, Texas, was initially found by prospectors back in 1922. Odessa Crater is thought to be the largest of several smaller craters formed by the impact of numerous octahedrites that fell in ancient times. This example of the iron meteorite subclassified as IAB-MG has a superb sculptural shape and excellent luster. A very clean sample of the 'iconic iron' from the Lone Star State, the offering weighs 5.4 kilograms (12 pounds) and is a top example of Odessa. The massive and complete individual displays an outstanding shape and abundance of character. Broad, crater-like regmaglypts cover the metallic brownish exterior, which looks quite a lot like Gibeon material. Originally from the Robert A. Haag Meteorite Collection, this superlative specimen comes with an original copy of The Robert A. Haag Collection Field Guide of Meteorites from 1997. The solid heavy space rock is naturally artistic and looks phenomenal from every side or any angle.
Measurements: 8.07 x 5.51 x 2.76 inches (20.50 x 14.00 x 7.00 cm), weighs 5,443.1 grams (12 pounds)

Provenance: Ex. Robert Haag Meteorite Collection, The Geoff Notkin Collection
