Description

Fossil "Sea Scorpion" Split Pair
Eurypterus remipes
Silurian
Fiddler Green Formation
Herkimer County, New York, USA

Presented on a custom black metal armature, this superlative 'split' pair of Eurypterid fossils is quite the sight. The ancient "Sea Scorpions" from the Paleozoic Era are out of the Fiddler Green Formation in New York State. Extremely old, even by fossil standards, these marine creatures were patrolling the sea floors in the Silurian. The fossils measure 3.5 inches (9 cm) in length and, unlike many "positive-negative" type examples, have significant material on both sides. The rocks are effectively convex and concave, yet their fossils are both substantial. Restoration appears to be minimal on the dark grayish-brown bodies against the greenish-gray matrix rock. Coupled with its custom base, this incredible duo presents superbly and is obviously of top quality. Eurypterids like this pairing are not often seen on the market and represent an interesting variety of arthropod, to say the least. The forms have a tapered shape from the head down to the pointed 'stinger' tail, and obviously, functional paddles flank the upper part of each segmented body.
Measurements: 7.68 x 6.30 x 1.57 inches (19.50 x 16.00 x 4.00 cm)
