Description

Sikhote-Alin Meteorite "The Shark"
Iron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time

Affectionately referred to as "The Shark" for its obvious zoomorphic qualities, this outstanding individual represents the Sikhote-Alin Meteorite from Russia, which, at the time it fell in 1947, was the most widely witnessed fall up to that time in human history. The piece weighing 280 grams is heavily "regmaglypted" with numerous shallow craters over the entirety of its complex and rather smooth, yet textural, surface. Geoff Notkin kept several zoomorphic examples in his "Sikhote-Alin Zoo," including this chondrichthyan representation showing a right-facing shark silhouette with open jaws ready to take some massive bite.
Measurements: 3.62 x 1.48 x 1.02 inches (9.20 x 3.77 x 2.58 cm), weighs 279.5 grams

Provenance: The Geoff Notkin Collection
