Description
Josephine Oliver (American, 1908-1991)Landscape
Pastel on paper
7 x 9-1/4 inches (17.8 x 23.5 cm) (sheet)
Property from the Estate of Olin Travis and Josephine Oliver
Travis's second wife, Josephine Oliver (1908-1991), was Reaugh's protegee and an accomplished painter in her own right. She eventually played violin for the Dallas and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras. Josephine's family lived near Mr. Reaugh's studio and home, El Sibil, in Oak Cliff, and cooked meals for him. Eventually, the Oliver family moved into one end of El Sibil. Mr. Reaugh purchased a high-end violin for Josephine and sponsored her violin studies in Chicago. Eventually she became an instructor for younger students in his classes at Oak Cliff and also on the famed Reaugh sketching trips to the Southwest. An accomplished pastelist and oil painter, Josephine was remarkably talented in landscape painting as seen in Landscape (71012) in this auction. Moreover, her portrait of Harry Carnohan (71017) is well accomplished and acknowledges the bonds between Mr. Reaugh's long-time students and exemplifies her skills as a portraitist. Her especially sensitive conte crayon portrait of Mr. Reaugh (71018) also speaks to her fondness for him.
