A Yoruba Epa Mask
Nigeria, Middle part of the 20th century

In the style of, or from the workshop of, Areogun of Osi Ilorin (c. 1889-1954). The janus faced helmet supporting a circular platform and figural scene of a bearded chief or ruler holding two staffs, one with a rooster on top and the other with a gourd vessel at top. Similar gourd vessels are wrapped around his head scarf and tied onto the long braid down his back. Two smaller figures at his sides are linked to his belt by a rope. They also grasp the bottoms of the staffs. In very good condition, a large piece was broken and reattached on the back of the platform.
