A Chavin Gold Plaque
Peru, c. 600-200 BC

Hammered gold alloy plaque depicting the frontal view of a supernatural feline with fangs and flaring nostrils. From the head two crested animal or serpent heads ascend, and from the mouth and down the sides two small serpents descend and curve outwards. A flat border all around, pierced at top center. In very good condition, very minor creasing, discoloration, and mineral deposits.
