A Maya Cylinder Vase and Flask
Mesoamerica, Late Classic, c. 700-900 AD

The cylinder vase engraved with a wide band of water birds. A carved and engraved glyph band near the rim. Cream-colored earthenware with red pigment (cinnabar) rubbed into the engraved lines. The small flask, familiarly called a "poison bottle" since trace remains of toxic substances were found in some, has flat circular sides with mold-made and carved seated figure and glyph, red pigment in the recessed areas. The flask in good condition, broken and repaired. The vase with a repaired crack from the rim down one side and 5 inches across the lower quarter of the vase, with professional restoration over the repairs, and a dark area on one side from when it was fired (a smoke cloud).
