Description

Five Yaka Hairpins
Democratic Republic of Congo, late 19th to early 20th century

Wood with patinas from use. Three of antelope heads with tall horns; one a traditional Yaka head with large upturned nose and crested headdress; one (the shortest) with geometric sections, one side covered with fine geometric patterns, the other side with a bird in a cartouche. In good condition, appropriate for age, use, and materials; the Yaka head has a crack on its proper left back side; one antelope head has a shortened tine and possibly the tips of the horns are deficient, and there is a crack on the front; another antelope head with crack on back. Each with a custom wood stand.
