Description
EDWIN HOWLAND BLASHFIELD (American, 1848-1936)At the Well, circa 1867-81
Oil on canvas
17 x 14-1/4 inches (43.2 x 36.2 cm)
Signed, dedicated and inscribed lower right: To my friend / M.P Hennessy / Edwin Howland Blashfield / Paris
THE JEAN AND GRAHAM DEVOE WILLIFORD CHARITABLE TRUST
This lot retains its original frame.
A native New Yorker, Blashfield was a noted academic artist who distinguished himself both as a premier muralist and genre painter. This work dates from 1874 to 1880, the period Blashfield was training in Paris with Leon Bonnat and Jean-Leon Gerome. The classically beautiful woman, whom he depicted with elegant line and rich, inventive color, was doubtless drawn from his travels to Italy. M. P. Hennessy, to whom the artist dedicated this painting, may, in fact, have been the heir to the Cognac fortune.
Condition Report*:
Lined canvas. Paint film in fully stable condition. UV examination reveals only minor amounts of fluorescing. There is very finely-done inpaint in some craquelure in the figure's dress, in her hair above her forehead, and in the sky. A patch fluoresces white on the rock on which the figure rests her forearm. Framed Dimensions 28 X 25 Inches
