Description
An Izapa PectoralChiapas, Mexico, c. 300 BC - 300 AD
Shell with remains of red pigment, carved and incised to depict a deity crouching atop a bird head (?). The figure is most likely the important rain god Chahk, later known as Tlaloc. The Izapan culture comes between that of the ancient Olmec and the later Maya cultures in the region. This figure combines elements of the Olmec and Maya representations of Chahk, with a raised upper lip, and a flame-like brow or protuberance on the head with an incised scrolling design. Pierced twice on its back for suspension or attachment. In excellent condition.
