A Veracruz Monkey Pendant
East Mexico, Late Classic Period, c. 600-900 AD

Carved from thick shell with traces of red pigment in the recessed areas. The monkey is shown crouching forward from its hands and its knees. It has conical drilled holes at the hands and through the back for suspension. The eyes were drilled for inlay, now missing. In very good condition, the surface smooth and satiny, appealing to the touch.
