This rare ice pail or cache-pot in the Moorish taste may have been designed to be used in one of the Moorish style rooms which were beginning to become popular in the mid-19th century. Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Elder had one in his famed "Nikolaevsky" palace in St. Petersburg, built by the architect Andreas Stackensneider (1802-1865).
