Description

Duchess Elsa of Württemberg, Princess Schaumburge-Lippe: A Russian Imperial Presentation Gold-Mounted Gunmetal Cigarette Case
Attributed to Fabergé, St. Petersburg, circa 1914-1917
3 x 2-1/2 x 0-1/2 inches (7.6 x 6.3 x 1.3 cm)

PROVENANCE:
Private Collection, California.

Another reeded gunmetal case of similar size by Fabergé was sold from a German collection, Sotheby's Geneva, Fabergé, Gold Boxes & Objets de Luxe, 2-15 November 2022, lot 1321.

Duchess Elsa of Württemberg's (1876 -1936) ancestry tied her closely to both the royal houses of Württemberg and the Russian Romanovs. She was the daughter of Duke Eugen of Württemberg and Grand Duchess Vera Konstantinovna of Russia, herself a granddaughter of Tsar Nicholas I. This made Elsa a great-granddaughter of the Tsar and placed her within the extended Romanov family network, connecting her to many of the key figures of late Imperial Russia.

Raised primarily in Stuttgart, Elsa grew up amid the rarefied social and cultural milieu of the Württemberg court, known for its cosmopolitanism and deep ties to the Russian imperial family. In 1897 she married Prince Albert of Schaumburg-Lippe, a member of another prominent German princely house. The marriage linked two significant German dynasties but remained childless.

Estimate: $4,000 - $6,000.
