Internationally renowned architect and designer Santiago Calatrava created a group of ceramics in the town of Manises, Spain, known for a centuries old ceramics tradition. The collection was exhibited in New York at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute in late 2005. The decoration of stylized human figures, bulls and horses was incised or painted onto the surfaces by Calatrava, using natural iron-oxide pigments in use in the region since before Roman times.

Calatrava made a statement at the time of the exhibition, noting, "It's such a primitive, elemental way to draw, and yet the greatest of the modern masters, Picasso and Matisse, chose it as one of their means of expression. So there is a lot to confront in making these works-but there is something very refreshing about doing them, too."
