In this powerful charcoal study for Spirit of America, created for the 1929 Boy Scout Handbook cover, Rockwell presents a young scout in profile, his expression resolute and uplifted. Behind him appear the faint visages of American heroes-Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and others-linking the scout's ideals to the nation's founding principles. The composition embodies the Boy Scouts of America's highest virtues: duty, honor, and service. One of Rockwell's most iconic BSA images, it visually defines the organization's creed that good citizenship and moral strength are the truest spirit of America.
