The four-piece carved giltwood bedroom suite comprising a double bed with headboard, footboard and rails, two bedside cabinets and a dropfront chest, each with inset fabric panels. The headboard with addorsed sphinx figures resting upon fluted columns joined by a foliate carved arch, the footboard with similar decoration but with recumbent sphinx figures, joined by carved side rails; the bedside cabinets with foliate carved circles to the fronts of the doors and carved palmette frieze concealing a single drawer, raised on carved paw feet; the drop-front chest with foliate carved arch to front, carved palmette frieze concealing two drawers, raised on recumbent sphinx figures, the chest opening to reveal six drawers with carved figural handles.

An archival photograph exists of the bed and side cabinets stamped on the front LOUIS C. TIFFANY, TIFFANY & CO. and to the back RETURN TO, TIFFANY GLASS AND DECORATING CO., 333 To 341 Fourth Avenue, New York, and bearing the label STABILIMENTO ARTISTICO M. GUGGENHEIM, VENEZIA, the photograph also numbered 55.

Based on the evidence of the period archival photograph this set is attributed to the designer, manufacturer and art dealer Michelangelo Guggenheim who was active in Venice from the middle until the end of the nineteenth century. Working primarily in adaptations of historical period styles, Guggenheim was responsible for the decoration and furnishing of a number of prominent Venetian palaces during his career.

This particular set, in a bold Egyptian Revival vocabulary, was evidently retailed through the offices of Louis Comfort Tiffany in New York around 1900.
