Thomas Hotchkiss is considered one of the more poetic of the 19th-century landscape artists. A friend of the well-known Asher B. Durand, he first drew recognition in the late 1850s as a member of the Hudson River School, and moved to Italy in 1860, where he was welcomed into the literary and artistic circles of the American community in Rome. Among his friends was the painter Elihu Vedder, a favorite artist of Graham Williford's. Hotchkiss was born near Hudson, New York, and was active in New York City where he was a member of the American National Academy and exhibited at the National Academy of Design.
