PROVENANCE:
Richard York Gallery, New York (label verso).
Graham Williford collected American artists working in France, but also occasionally collected French artists whose work he found particularly remarkable. Such is the case with the present arrangement of purple plums by Louis Marie de Schryver. De Schryver had a long and distinguished artistic career, beginning with the first public showing of his work at the age of 13, two flower paintings displayed at the Paris Salon of 1876. A painter of genre scenes, urban life, landscapes, nudes, portraits and still lifes, he is best known for his paintings of Parisian flower sellers. Equally adept at handling oil and watercolor, de Schryver was capable of achieving an astonishing level of nearly photographic naturalism in water media, as evident in this deceptively simple still life.
