We wish to thank Professor Margaret MacDonald for her gracious assistance in cataloguing this lot. In her opinion, "the butterfly signature in graphite pencil on the tab is not by Whistler: it is probably by one of his assistants, possibly Mortimer Menpes or Walter Sickert, who helped Whistler to print the Venice etchings."
