Description

Rhodochrosite with Quartz and Sulfides
19-01 Pocket, Detroit City Portal, Sweet Home Mine, Buckskin Gulch, Mt. Bross, Alma District, Park Co., Colorado, USA
11.3 x 9.4 x 5.8 cm (4.4 x 3.7 x 2.3 in)

Mined in June of 2019, this first-rate Rhodochrosite specimen was excavated from the very first pocket (aptly named after the date discovered) found in the new Detroit City portal ventures of the Sweet Home Mine. Of this pocket, there were three specimens in this style of a single large crystal on matrix, and of those three, this was by far the best one. Reaching nearly 5 cm from tip-to-tip, the largest Rhodochrosite rhombohedron is of a substantial size, and the color is just right: a bright cherry red that glows when backlit. Towards the edges of the dark Tetrahedrite matrix is a lovely spray of white Quartz crystals, just touching the side of the Rhodochrosite, as well as two smaller Rhodochrosite crystals that accent the focal point. The backside even has a smattering of brightly fluorescent Chalcopyrite. This specimen is in great condition, with only a small area of cleavage at the right side of the crystal.

Ex. Thomas Everitt collection (#TAE-163).
