Description

Rhodochrosite on Quartz
Four Ball Pocket, Fluorite Raise, Sweet Home Mine, Buckskin Gulch, Mt. Bross, Alma District, Park Co., Colorado, USA
13.5 x 8.2 x 3.7 cm (5.3 x 3.2 x 1.5 in)

This very well-crystallized plate of Rhodochrosite on Quartz has a fantastic array of rhombohedral crystals, all of which having an intense bright red hue, the best color you could ask for when selecting a Sweet Home Mine Rhodochrosite. While there are many rhombohedrons on this plate, they are still well isolated, with accents of clear Quartz and Sulfide minerals peeking out between the sharp edges. The luster on the crystals is highly reflective, giving the specimen an eye-catching shine. Incredibly, this specimen has no repairs or restorations: this remarkable plate is in its original and virtually perfect condition, carefully looked after since its extraction.

Included with this excellent piece is a copy of the Denver Fine Mineral Show's 2019 guidebook, which displays this very specimen front-and-center on its cover, as an example of the best that Colorado has to offer. This specimen was also in the collection of the fondly remembered Mike Groben, who was one of the Friends of Mineralogy founders, as well as a consulting editor on Rocks & Minerals magazine.

Ex. Mike Groben collection (#SH 3146).
Ex. Thomas Everitt collection (#TAE-75).
