These Rutile strands have bundled together within the Quartz matrix in an unusually parallel orientation, with most of the Rutile crystals growing together in the same direction, like bundles of red straw. There are two primarily parallel clusters like this, one large and one small, facing opposite of each other in the Quartz host. In the case of this specimen, the deeply saturated vermillion color of these Rutile crystals is caused by a coating of iron oxides. This paragenesis can be clearly seen on one end of the larger cluster, where the cross-section reveals a dark metallic core and the hematite coating on most of the crystals.
