Description
LARGE ODESSA METEORITE - AESTHETIC IRON METEORITE FROM THE LONE STAR STATE WITH MACOVICH COLLECTION PROVENANCEIron, coarse octahedrite
Odessa, Texas
Originating in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, it was approximately 65,000 years ago that the Odessa meteorite entered Earth's atmosphere as a large fireball and broke up in flight, creating one large crater and several smaller craters in what is now a working Texas oilfield. The abstract, erect form now offered originates from that same event-the second most famous American impact event on record (the first being Meteor Crater, Arizona-see lot 11047. Naturally sculpted by forces both terrestrial and extraterrestrial, this meteorite was traveling at a cosmic velocity of approximately twelve miles per second before superheating during its plunge through Earth's atmosphere, where it experienced temperatures hotter than the surface of the Sun; after landing on Earth's surface, its exposure to tens of thousands of years of weather resulted in further sculpting. With a wide seam running along its length, and a wealth of furrows and ridges rendered in a deep charcoal patina, this is the quintessence of an Odessa iron meteorite-and a dramatic example from the most historic meteorite shower in Texas history. Accompanied by a custom armature.
It measures 331 x 219 x 147mm (13 x 8.5 x 5.75 inches) and 21.8 kilograms (48 pounds).
Provenance: The Macovich Collection-the world's most celebrated collection of aesthetic iron meteorites.
