The Order of the Arrow Handbook 50th Anniversary, New Brunswich, New Jersey, 1965, n.p., illustrated.
Joseph Csatari's Higher Vision is a powerful meditation on heritage, leadership, and the moral ideals of Scouting. Displayed at Philmont Scout Ranch-the Boy Scouts of America's iconic national high-adventure base and training center-the painting depicts a young Order of the Arrow Scout receiving a symbolic hide map from a Native American elder. The map, rich with pictographic storytelling, represents a transfer of wisdom and tradition across generations.
Bathed in dramatic light and set against a mountainous sky, the scene elevates the Scout's journey as one of both inward growth and outward responsibility. Csatari, known for his tenure as the official BSA artist and successor to Norman Rockwell, imbues the work with reverence and clarity. Higher Vision reflects the spiritual and service-oriented ethos of the Order of the Arrow while underscoring Scouting's longstanding-if evolving-dialogue with Native American imagery and ideals.
