The attribution of area to this war shield is based on two published examples. The older of the two is in Berlin (Heinz Kelm. Kunst Vom Sepik II. Berlin Museum für Völkerkunde, 1966, ill. 206, collected in a "village on the North River", with no exact date given). The other, shown in color and having the same reddish ocher, black, and white as this example, was photographed by Barry Craig at the Christian Mission to Many Lands, Yellow River, West Sepik Province in 1969 (Harry Beran and Barry Craig, eds., Shields of Melanesia. Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2005, p.77).

There are numbers of minor cracks and abrasions, as well as slight pigment loss.
