Description

Arsenic-bearing Pyromorphite
Bunker Hill Mine, Wardner, Shoshone County, Idaho, USA
8.6 x 6.8 x 3.4 cm (3.4 x 2.7 x 1.3 in)

Few localities in the world have produced Arsenian Pyromorphite specimens that rival the famous finds from the Bunker Hill Mine. This example comes from the onetime find in the early 1990s, which yielded what are considered to be some of the best Arsenian Pyromorphite specimens in the world. The piece is particularly striking and somewhat unusual one, showing a dense coverage of rounded crystals-rather than the more typical barrel-shaped prismatic habits-blanketing the top side of an undulating, three-dimensional matrix. Interestingly, the overall outline of the matrix gives the piece a distinctive boot-like shape. The Pyromorphite is richly saturated with a burnt orange color, and the wet, glossy luster beautifully accentuates the spherical habit of the crystals, giving the entire specimen a vivid and eye-catching presentation.

Ex. F John Barlow collection.
