A Paracas (Ocucaje) King Vulture Effigy Vessel...
Description
A Paracas (Ocucaje) King Vulture Effigy VesselPeru, Early Horizon, c. 700-100 BC
Blackware ceramic with polychrome resin paint. This late Paracas vessel is modeled as a king vulture standing on four legs, recognizable by its prominent cranial growth and circular feather ruff around the neck. While the head is rendered with naturalistic detail, the body is more stylized, decorated with triangular lozenges in post-fire resin paint to suggest body feathers, and striated patterns on the wings. The potter nonetheless differentiated body from wing plumage in keeping with the actual bird: the pointed body feathers contrast with the long, striated wing feathers. A spout in a funnel-shape rises from the back and the bridge handle from it connects to the back of the head. Condition: The proper right wing reattached, restoration under the wing through the body and part of the proper back left foot. The cranial growth is reattached and restored over the break.
A work of remarkable artistry and precision, this vessel is both highly detailed and visually compelling, a fascinating example of Paracas ceramic sculpture.
