Felipe Morales of Oaxaca is a self-taught artist who later attended the Taller de Artes Plásticas Rufino Tamayo. Morales's works are a blend of Magic Realism and the Surreal, often laden with symbolism of pre-Hispanic and Catholic traditions. In La Consagración de Los Toros, Morales, in a similar style of Catholic religious iconography, rendered a large procession of figures in a linear flat plane of space. A bull, anointed by plants, is lying on an altar supported by a male figure in each corner. The title La Consagración de Los Toros, or consecration, is the act of blessing the creature as it prepares to be used in either religious ceremony or traditional bullfighting. The moon, often a symbol for planting or cycles, hangs above the procession. Female figures, carrying candles, have heads veiled by long shawls or rebozo. The shawl is often a gesture of devotion in the Catholic faith and has been an adapted element of traditional Spanish dress by women. Morales's use of layered symbolism in La Consagración de Los Toros reflects his ability to weave together myth, ritual, and faith into a cohesive vision.
Estimate: $500 - $700.
