In 1864 José Jiménez Y Aranda submitted a genre painting for his debut in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts Séville salon. Several years later, in 1871, he traveled to Rome where he met Mariano Fortuny who had a profound impact on his work. He later spent nine years in Paris, influenced by the works of Chardin and Watteau, before returning to his hometown of Séville. Jiménez Y Aranda combined his love of eighteenth century genre painting with his outstanding illustration skills to capture the rich details of everyday life, such as those in the offered work above. He exhibited abroad in London, Munich and Paris salons. Hugely popular in the United States, most of his works reside here such as one of his most ambitious works, Holy Week in Seville, 1879 which is located in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco.
