Achenbach was an important and prolific marine and landscape painter. Indeed, he is considered a pioneer of modern German landscape painting. He trained at the academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, worked in Dusseldorf, and traveled extensively in northern Europe and throughout the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and northern Germany where he found his primary subject-the cold turbulent waters of the North and Baltic Seas. His wanderlust, which provided inspiration for his energetic landscapes never diminished. Well into the later years of his career then artist explored the Tyrolean mountains as well as Southern Italy. His works are represented in numerous museum collections worldwide.
