This piece is a study for the finished painting that appeared on the cover of the June 28, 1958 issue of The Saturday Evening Post.

Jockey Eddie Arcaro was the subject of this cover, and in Norman Rockwell and The Saturday Evening Post The Later Years 1943-1971 he commented, "My cover as usual has some trifle exaggerations, but I'm sure he won't mind that." Dr. Donald R. Stoltz and Marshall L. Stoltz's commentary continues, "Note the bright color of the racing silks, the mud spattered on the white riding pants, the stripes of the steward's shirt, and other details. It is not surprising that when Rockwell accepted the assignment of a racing theme he chose to portray this small, private drama rather than the public spectacle of the actual race."
