ZINCITE CRYSTALS on MATRIX
Franklin, Franklin Mining District, Sussex Co., New Jersey, USA

Zincite crystals are rare, and even rarer are Zincite crystals in matrix. What most people think of, as Zincite today, is the artificially grown material and not the unusual crystals that have been found in the Franklin area of New Jersey. This miniature specimen has two very well defined, deep red Zincite crystals that were significant enough to catch the attention of Washington A. Roebling who incorporated them into his mineral collection. His collection, in turn, was given to the Smithsonian and this specimen is accompanied by the Smithsonian Roebling label #R1794. Additional documentation shows that this unusual matrix specimen also graced the collections of L. Areson and Edward David, among others, as there are numerous collection numbers on the bottom of the specimen. If only this historic specimen could talk about what it has encountered along its 100+ year journey.
Overall measurements: 2 x 2 x 1.75 inches (5.1 x 5.1 x 4.4 cm). Offered at no reserve.

Provenance: Williams Minerals, ex. Edward David #42J, ex. L. Areson #385, ex. Smithsonian from the Roebling collection #R1794. [Hoppel Catalog # D0207]
