The Great Depression of the thirties hampered Howard Chandler Christy's flamboyant lifestyle as a bon vivant. During those years, Christy worked steadily, either painting portrait commissions or creating "art for art's sake." The many lively and appealing nudes he painted during this period, such as in this sun-drenched and wind-swept scene, demonstrated that the "Christy Girl" was approachable.
