This rare and very beautiful pair of Ovchinnikov vases are of an unusual design, which owes a greater visual dept to the Aesthetic period than to any Russian revival form. With their florid daisies and scrolling pastel acanthus and papyrus motifs, it may have been conceived for export by the Ovchinnikov firm, known to retail its works through Tiffany & Co., and other western merchants.
This pair appeared in New York at auction last in 1986, and subsequently, a related vase sold Sotheby's New York, Fabergé Russian Works of Art, Objects of Vertu and Silver, June 16, 1988, lot 397, indicating that there may once have been two pair.
