PROVENANCE:
Mr. Frank Berry;
Frederick H. Schrader, Napa Valley, acquired from the above.
The firm of Rivage was a well-known one in St. Petersburg in the reign of Alexander III, noted in business journals in 1885. The firm may have been founded by the descendants of Jonas Rivage and his son Carl, Swedes who worked in silver in the Russian capital from 1782 until the 1840s. The offered lot is set with a 1752 German States Lubeck 8 Schilling coin, which might have appealed to a Baltic clientele. Claw-handled cups, sometimes set with bear or tiger claws were popular models for vodka cups and were made up until the Revolution. A later example by Fabergé Moscow with a gold ruble from the reign of Catherine the Great and dated 1779 is currently in the London trade.
Property from the Collection of Frederick H. Schrader
