For a very similar brooch by Oscar Pihl in an original blue velvet case, see Tampere Museum, The Era of Fabergé, 2006, no. 96, p. 167. A design for a related brooch for Moscow also appears, p. 28, Snowman, A.K. Fabergé Lost and Found, Abrams, New York 1993.

Pihl apprenticed in the workshop of August Holmström in St. Petersburg qualifying as a master in 1887. At the recommendation of Holmström, Pihl, his future son-in-law, was sent in 1887 to head up the jewelry workshop in Moscow and remained there until his death in 1897. Two of their children, Alma and Oskar, followed in his father's profession.
