PROVENANCE:
Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, Russian Works of Art, May 1, 1973, lot 294;
Private Collection, New York;
Acquired from the above by the current owner.
This extraordinary carving of a black bear belongs to the group of amusing and justly famous hardstone animals produced by the Fabergé firm. The offered lot bears no signature or identifying marks, which is common to most of the animal figures, only a very few of which are marked. The piece retains its original case, which is stamped to the interior of the lid on the silk reading Fabergé with the imperial warrant, St. Petersburg, Moscow, London, dating the work to the period of 1906-1915 when Fabergé's London location was open. The quality of the bear and the unusual turquoise velvet lining recall an onyx polar bear with Vanderbilt associations, offered Christie's, London, November 27, 2017.
