Zak Kitnick (born 1984 in Los Angeles, California) lives and works in New York. He received his MFA from Bard College in 2015. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at Ribordy Contemporary, Geneva; White Flag Project, St. Louis; Rowhouse Project, Baltimore; Off Vendome, Düsseldorf; and Landings Project Space, Vest-fossen. His work has been included in group exhibitions at MoMA PS1, New York; Queens Museum of Art, New York; White Cube, London; David Zwirner, New York. Zak Kitnick's work is part of the collections of The Whitney Museum, New York; ICA, Miami; MAMCO, Geneva; Collezione Giancarlo e Danna Olgiati, Lugano.
Using the backgammon pattern as a repeated motif in works of identical geometry, Kitnick's paintings develop the seriality often characterizing the artist's sculptures. In an art historical sense, Kitnick's work takes up questions asked by various lineages of Conceptual Art, as in the example of Daniel Buren: What are the minimum requirements to establish a sense of authorship? Or, in Duchamp's case: Why play the game of art when you can play an actual game, like chess?
