Description
Sikhote-Alin MeteoriteIron, IIAB
Maritime Territory, Siberia, Russia - (46°09'36"N, 134° 39'12"E)
Witnessed Fall: February 12, 1947, 10:30 am local time
2.57 x 1.92 x 1.17 inches (6.53 x 4.87 x 2.98 cm)
This sculptural fragment of the Sikhote-Alin Iron Meteorite displays the distinctive features formed during a fiery descent through Earth's atmosphere. The surface shows a combination of smooth, molten flow lines and sharply defined indentations, known as regmaglypts, created by ablation during flight. Subtle variations in metallic luster reveal the Nickel-Iron composition characteristic of this famous fall. Recovered from the 1947 impact site in the Sikhote-Alin Mountains of eastern Russia, this specimen represents one of the more uncommon, witnessed meteorite events in recorded history. This is a bold and well-preserved example from a legendary meteorite fall that weighs an impressive 226 grams.
