Description
EDWARD BOREIN (American, 1872-1945)The War Party, 1917
Etching on paper
Plate: 10 x 12 inches (25.4 x 30.5 cm)
Signed and dated in pencil lower margin: Edward Borein 1917
California artist Edward Borein grew up working on ranches throughout the west coast. His early talent as an artist was recognized and encouraged by his parents, but before turning his talents to a full time pursuit of an artistic career, Borein chose to work as a cowboy both in California and Mexico. His work gave him ample inspiration to fill a long career as a painter working in oils, watercolors, pen and ink, and in etchings. At the latter, he really has no peers in the field of American Western Art. During his life as well as today, his precisely drawn and engraved scenes of the historic west, of modern ranch life, and Native American culture were extremely popular and sought after by collectors.
These three etchings are excellent examples of his talent in the medium and of his thorough knowledge of his subject matter. The War Party and Indian on Horseback show both his skill at drawing and his knowledge of the cultures of the native people of the Northern Plains. Cattle Drive is a direct reflection of the many years that he spent as a working cowboy involved in just this sort of pursuit.
