FROM THE PROPERTY OF THE BELO COLLECTION
Frank X. Tolbert 2 studied art at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas and North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. Based in Houston, Tolbert 2's early work was heavily influenced by the traditions of mid-century Texas Modernists like the Dallas Nine, particularly Otis Dozier, with whom he studied. In his more mature paintings, Tolbert 2 creates narrative works rich with humor, ambiguity, and his own personal iconography. He has shown with galleries like William Campbell Contemporary Art, Kirk Hopper Fine Art, and Gerald Peters Gallery and has been in over twenty group and solo exhibitions. Tolbert 2's works can be found in the permanent collections at museums like the Dallas Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.
